Mr. Ha Minh Hiep |
My name is Ha Minh Hiep. I am one of the first successful candidates in the Dual Graduate Program in 2005 between Japan Advanced Institute of Science and Technology (JAIST) and Vietnam National University.
Recently, I am studying in the PhD program in Tamiya Laboratory, School of Materials Science, JAIST. Like other Vietnamese students, previous to coming here, I was very concerned about my new life in Japan, my studies, as well as about communication, because I could not speak Japanese at all. However, everything in JAIST cured my worries. Up to now, I can say JAIST has the best conditions and we can do everything at the world level. We have a chance to conduct the advanced research in three major areas: materials science, information science and knowledge science. With the critical aim of making considerable contributions to the development of future technologies, JAIST has attracted many leading Professors in the world and the number of outstanding researchers in JAIST is increasing annually.
Before studying here, I have never imagined such a perfect facility. JAIST possesses the most modern machines and ideal conditions to perform the experiments at a highly standard. As an official policy of JAIST, English is used professionally in the presentations, discussions and communications. If you can speak English very well, it is a strong advantage and easy for you to integrate into this expert research community. Otherwise, do not worry because you can join many English classes in JAIST to improve your language abilities, such as speaking, communicating, and writing, as well as TOEFL and TOEIC study skills.
Significantly, many famous Professors in the world, especially some of them who have achieved the Nobel Prize, make impressive presentations for all students in JAIST. At that time, we can ask questions and express freely new ideas and opinions about their topics. On the other hand, we students always receive careful support from the administrative office staff with their friendly communicative environment, and we enjoy many exciting extracurricular activities.
Similar to other members in the laboratory, I usually get up at 9 am. After taking a bath, I have breakfast; prepare some necessary things and go to Laboratory at 10.00 am with high excitement. The main topic in my Laboratory is biomaterials and we are now focusing on the development of biosensors and biochips for advanced technologies. Under the lead of an excellent scholarly professor, we created several research groups. Each group has three or four members and we can enjoy the experiments and always discuss together about the new results and phenomena.
Moreover, in a month, our laboratory has two research presentations and four paper presentations. The members will present their own experimental results in the research presentations, and the new reports from the high impact factor journals in the paper presentations. The strongly scientific discussions along with many important suggestions from Professor are very useful for our students. According to this method, each member in Laboratory not only has great understanding about his research but also has the particular contributions to other students in Laboratory. After finishing a hard working day at 6.00 pm, most laboratory members have dinner together in JAIST cafeteria. This shop is conveniently located in JAIST and has many delicious Japanese foods. In the meal, we can talk about the foreign culture, the sport events and the social issues. I finish a day by coming back to the student dormitory at 9.00 p.m. I think this dormitory is extremely convenient for the students. We can rent a single room with low fees for electricity, gas, and water and so on. With the clean bathroom, the student dormitory is a wonderful place to relax and enjoy our private life. At the weekend, I usually join the tennis club in JAIST and play soccer with the Vietnamese students. We are a closely related community and usually have wonderful meetings with other countryfs groups.
JAIST also creates the good conditions for us to take part in other sport activities such as table tennis, badminton, soft ball and so on. Although, JAIST is relatively far from the city and it is difficult for international students to go outside, the JAIST shuttle bus is free and takes you to Tsurugi station in 15 min. This station is connected to Kanazawa City and other areas in Ishikawa Prefecture. In my opinion, JAIST is a perfect research institute for everyone who actually wants to become a proficient academic scientist. |
