Q1. What is JAIST?
A1. Japan Advanced Institute of Science and Technology (JAIST) was founded in 1990 as the first Independent National Institute for graduate research and education in science and technology. JAIST strives to be a first-class research institution, and aims at making serious contributions to the development of modern society. We create an educational and research environment for future leaders, who will further science and technology into future generations. Learn more about JAIST.
Q2. Can I choose my supervisor at JAIST?
A2. Yes, you can. Please take a look at "List of Research Themes/Collaborative Research for the Dual Graduate Education Program between VNU-Hanoi and JAIST" for possible research in JAIST.
Those who were successful in the entrance examination can start by contacting JAIST coordinators (Click here to send e-mail) for advice regarding your research in the Dual Graduate University and consult with him on your future research in JAIST. He will introduce professors working in areas of interest to you. You should contact those professors (by e-mail) for more information during your first year of study, so that you can enter the appropriate laboratory in your second year of study.
Q3. How much is the cost of living at JAIST?
A3. It is difficult to generalize about living costs because expenses vary considerably from person to person. But according to the nation-wide statistics by the University Co-op in Japan, we can estimate living expenses at about \60,000 per month (cf. 130,000 in Tokyo, \115,000 in Osaka). See Life at JAIST.
Q4. Can I get a room in student housing?
A4. Yes, you can. International students are given priority for the rooms in dormitories.

Q5. How many Vietnamese students are studying in JAIST?
A5. There are 30 Vietnamese students studying in JAIST as of February 1, 2007. See "Number of International Students in JAIST by country".
Q6. What kind of transportation can I use from Vietnam to JAIST?
A6.
1. From Hanoi Airport/ Ho Chi Minh Airport - direct flight to Kansai Airport or Narita Airport.
From Kansai Airport to Kanazawa, it takes about 3 hours and 40 minutes by train.
From Narita Airport to Kanazawa, it takes about 6 hours from Narita Airport by train.
2. Another transportation route is:
Hanoi Airport/ Ho Chi Minh Airport to Incheon Airport, Korea to Komatsu Airport It takes 30 to 40 minutes by car from Komatsu Airport to JAIST. The limousine bus departing from Komatsu Airport stops at JAIST.
Q7. Should I learn the Japanese Language?
A7. In laboratories at JAIST, you can communicate with your supervisor or colleagues in English. All international students can live at JAIST without major difficulties in daily life by using English.
JAIST offers international students Japanese language classes free of charge to raise their Japanese language proficiency, which is necessary for daily life.
Six classes are offered, for students of different abilities. Classes meet once or twice a week, for 90 minutes. Please join a class, to enhance your daily life in Japan.
Q8. Can I get a part-time job?
A8. Some laboratories may offer assistantships for experimentation, teaching assistantship (TA positions) etc. Please consult your supervisor about a part-time job after you have been assigned to a laboratory in JAIST.
