Information Theoretic Considerations on Cross Layer Optimization for Communication Systems using Coded Higher Order Modulation

Vision

Determining the optimal labeling for BICM-ID using relatively high order modulation such as 256 quadrature phase-amplitude modulation (QAM), which best matches the code structure, is very difficult, because it belongs to the combinatorial problem where to obtain the real optimal mapping pattern, all possible labeling patterns have to be tested. The major goal of this project is to achieve a new mapping rule for BICM-ID using higher order QAM, with the aim of achieving very close to the Gaussian channel capacity. Both extrinsic information transfer (EXIT) chart analysis and bit error rate (BER) simulation are to be conducted to verify the effectiveness of the techniques obtained as results of this project.
