■ Title
A VR haunted house changing the scale of horror according to player's heart rate
■ Abstract
When people feel nervous, the brain produces something that makes people feel happy in order to relieve tension and maintain the brain balance. The timid person who has the low level of patience with fear, cannot feel happy in a haunted house. Nevertheless, the courageous person who has a high tolerance for fear, they also cannot feel happy in the haunted house since they do not feel terror.
This research establishes a VR haunted house which based on the user's heartbeat data to instantly adjust the terror level in order to provide users more effective and pleasant terror experience.
■ Comment
It is my honor to be award The Presentation Excellence Award in the Society for Art and Science, Expressive Japan 2018. No matter when and where it is, there will always be people who are chasing excitement and the sensation of terror, for example, go to the haunted house. However, there is not everyone who has already being to the haunted house can feel excitement and have a great time and even there are some people do not has the courage to go into the haunted house. Therefore, I was think about how to let people feel excitement and happy during their haunted house trip.
After I entered JAIST, I have learned various advanced science and technology and using those knowledge I have made a Virtual haunted house world which could realize some functions that could not be realized in the real world, such as based on user's heart beat to automatically adjust terror level.
Finally, an experiment shows that this VR haunted house could let people feel excitement and happy during their haunted house trip and also let more people who never been to a haunted house have a courage to be there and also enjoy this VR haunted house. The last but not the least, I would like to thanks to all who cooperated in the experiment and also thanks for the support from Miyata laboratory. Without the guidance and encouragement from Professor Kazunori Miyata and Research associate Masahiro Ura I cannot finished my research and also cannot received this award. Moreover, I would like to express my deepest appreciation to the Society for Art and Science.
