■Title
Design of Magnetic-Plasmonic Ternary Metallic Nanoparticles
■Abstract
Magnetic-plasmonic multimetallic nanoparticles (NPs) which incorporate magnetic elements with plasmonic metals have attracted much attention as next-generation bioprobes simultaneously enabling plasmonic bioimaging and magnetic manipulation. Unfortunately, however, integration of Fe with Au (or Ag) is challenging due to the large immiscibility in binary Au-Fe and Ag-Fe systems. Even though much effort has been made to synthesize AuFe alloy or FePt@Au core@shell magnetic-plasmonic systems, most of the literature conflict each other in terms of structure-property relation, and therefore, there still remains several challenges regarding the chemical synthesis of homogeneous alloy NPs without any phase segregation, while in the case of core@shell NPs, inability to coat magnetic core with the plasmonic shell, suppressing the formation of pure Au or Ag NPs is a major challenge.
On the other hand, there are a number of studies which show that, Au or Ag has been included in fcc FePt, as a dopant to lower the annealing temperature required for the transformation from chemically-disordered fcc phase to chemically-ordered L10 phase. On the basis of these previous studies, we designed a synthetic strategy where Pt can be used as mediating element for combining Fe with Au or Ag, to form AuFePt or AgFePt ternary alloy NPs. The work demonstrates new avenues for the creation of multimetallic magnetic-plasmonic NPs and gives new insight into control over the resulting magnetic and plasmonic characteristics.
■Comment
I am very privileged to receive prestigious CSJ Student Presentation Award 2017. I am earnestly grateful to the organizing committee and jury members for recognition of my work because I believe that every other nominee for this award was equally capable of winning it. Besides, by attending this conference I got an opportunity to learn various aspects of cutting edge research presented by diversified peer research groups, which was definitely a phenomenal experience and helped me to improvise and broaden my knowledge in the materials science. Since I have successfully completed my doctoral studies in March 2017, therefore this award becomes more special for me as an acceptance of my research work by the greater global scientific community.
Having been a doctoral student of JAIST, I can safely say that I took correct decisions a few years ago to pursue my studies in this institute. The world-class scientific environment, research facilities, comfortable life and monetary supports granted by JAIST could only be made this success possible, therefore I would like to express my sincere gratitude towards JAIST. I would like to say that this is not just my individual effort, in fact, I would like to make a special mention of my supervisor Professor Shinya Maenosono, who has been my mentor throughout my masters and doctoral studies and stay in Japan. It is him, who saw the capabilities in me and nurtured my passion for pursuing doctoral studies in the materials science. Everyone has the dream to get such a teacher, fortunately, I got mine. Once again my heartfelt thanks to him. At the same, I would also like to take this opportunity to thank Assistant Professor Derrick Mott for his persistent guidance and constant motivation. It is important to mention and thanks, Mr. Koichi Higashimine here, for his valuable effort to help us regarding few of our most crucial measurements, without which our research work cannot be done. Special cheers to all the Maenosono lab members, this award is definitely an effort by all of us together and will be shared equally among all of us. Finally, I like to thanks my parents and family members for always encouraging me to continue the hard work and morally supporting throughout my good and bad times. I would like to dedicate this award to my parents and all others.
