1. Innovation design education
Students will strengthen:
- Ability to seek solutions and create new ideas and concepts
- Ability to design a system to answer needs through analysis of the interaction between essential technologies and the whole
- Knowledge management ability to bring technological, marketing, organization and social knowledge into innovations.
2. Enhancement of social competencies
Social competencies include skills in intellectual activities, social interpersonal relations and self-control. Students will learn key skills in listening, thinking, communicating, and advancing through learning methods of independent study, group work, and double-loop learning.
3. Enhancement of inventiveness
Inventiveness is based on creativity, industrial engineering, and knowledge-based society. Through this phase, students will take systematically structured Basic/Technical courses to learn to be innovative based on the knowledge and methodologies of mathematics, artificial intelligence, and data science.
Step by step support for taking courses
In the first quarter, students take introductory courses, Global Communication Courses and Global Liberal Arts Courses. Students are encouraged to have a clear future career goal and which degree (Knowledge, Information or Materials) they wish to obtain and they will be formally assigned to a lab. Students can move on to the next level, systematically taking courses from the Basic and Technical levels the guidance of their supervisor.
Unique system to support research
1. Multiple advisor system
Three advisors of (a supervisor, a second supervisor, and an advisor for the minor research project or internship) are assigned to each student and provide guidance and advice on student’s study and research and on general academic activities.
2. Multifaceted Research Activities through Minor and Major Research Project
In addition to a major research project (for a master's thesis or project report for a doctoral dissertation), students must work on a minor research project to acquire knowledge in relevant fields. These multifaceted research activities enable students to conduct research with a broader viewpoint and develop adaptive and applied skills to prepare for various challenges.
3. Career oriented guidance
JAIST supports students by introducing collaborators outside JAIST, internships and research experience abroad.
Educational programs to satisfy a variety of study purposes
JAIST provides various educational programs intended to help students achieve their personal, academic and professional goals. JAIST also provides support working professionals.
Quarter system
The quarter system enables students to complete individual courses in their major in approximately two months. Basically lectures are offered mainly in the mornings, with faculty tutorial hours, global communication and global liberal arts classes offered in the afternoons.
