Informal Laboratory Assignment Prior to Enrollment

Successful applicants for the admission to the master’s program are eligible to apply for “Informal Laboratory Assignment Prior to Enrollment”. This system will give them a chance to meet a professor of the proposed laboratory to get informal consent to join the laboratory before they enroll in JAIST.
Applicants are required to follow the procedures below.
However, successful applicants who are under “International Priority Graduate Programs (MEXT program)”, “Collaborative Education Programs (dual program)” and successful applicants who have passed the Examination for Admission on Recommendation for Overseas Residents have already obtained Informal Laboratory Assignment Prior to Enrollment, and are not required to follow the procedures below.

Ⅰ.Students who wish to apply must follow the procedures below:

  1. Applicants apply for the system using the form below.
    ・Enrollment in October 2024 : Online Application Form
    ・Enrollment in April 2025 : Online Application Form
    *Please apply as soon as possible, as this system may not be available depending on the assignment status.
    *Please be sure to apply even if you have already contacted the faculty member of your choice directly and get informal consent to join the laboratory.
    If you do not apply, you may not be assigned to that laboratory.
    *You may request to visit up to three laboratories at the most.
  2. Faculty members contact applicants to arrange a date and time for the visit.
  3. Laboratory visits must be completed within following periods:
    ・Enrollment in April : By the middle of March before your enrollment(※)
    ・Enrollment in October : By the middle of September before your enrollment(※)
    (※)You must have received an offer of acceptance or rejection to the laboratory by the deadline stated in "6". Please note that if you apply too close to the deadline, you may not be able to use this system due to difficulties in scheduling a laboratory visit.
  4. Faculty members inform applicants they offer an acceptance. Applicants make their final choice.
  5. Applicants who have obtained agreement from the faculty member regarding their assignment, submit the form for “Informal Laboratory Assignment Prior to Enrollment” to the faculty member by email.

    *You do not need submit the form to the Educational Service Section.
  6. Faculty members notify applicants of the official acceptance or rejection of the assignment offer by the following deadline.
    ・Enrollment in October 2024: By Wednesday, September 18, 2024
    ・Enrollment in April 2025: By Monday, March 17, 2025

Ⅱ.When to be assigned to a laboratory

All Master’s program students will be assigned to a laboratory tentatively when they enroll in JAIST (temporary lab assignment), and 3 months after enrollment, they will be assigned to a laboratory formally (formal lab assignment).
Students who have received an unofficial laboratory assignment prior to enrollment or have already been assigned to a laboratory will be assigned to the laboratory of their choice at the time of their temporary lab assignment.
For all other students, their temporary lab assignment will be determined based on the intended degree, and then they will request a laboratory of their choice for formal lab assignment.
*Students who have used “Informal Laboratory Assignment Prior to Enrollment” may also request a laboratory other than the one to which they have been assigned, at the time of their formal lab assignment.

At the time of formal lab assignment, each laboratory is required to accept at least two students who have not used “Informal Laboratory Assignment Prior to Enrollment” or who have used it but failed to agree on an assignment.
As an exception, with regard to senior lecturers, as the maximum number of students accepted in a year is three, students may not be able to request a senior lecturer at the time of the formal lab assignment.
