Degree Completion Requirements
Master’s Program
In principle, to be eligible for a master’s degree from JAIST, students are required to spend a minimum of 2 years in the master’s program, obtain the required number of course credits, submit a master’s thesis/research project report after receiving sufficient guidance, and pass the defense/Ph. D. qualifying examination and the final examination.
It might be possible to complete the master’s program in a shorter time after spending 1 year if students satisfy the specific requirements.
Students who complete the master’s program in Division of Advanced Science and Technology will be granted one of the following degrees:
- Master of Science in Knowledge Science
- Master of Science in Information Science
- Master of Science in Materials Science
Students who complete the master’s program in Division of Transdisciplinary Sciences will be granted the following degree:
- Master of Philosophy
Doctoral Program
In principle, to be eligible for a doctoral degree from JAIST, students are required to spend a minimum of 5 years in graduate institute (including the time spent in the master’s program), obtain the required number of course credits, submit a doctoral dissertation after receiving sufficient research guidance, and pass the defense and the final examination.
It might be possible to complete the doctoral program in a shorter time after spending 3 years (including the time spent in the master’s program) if students satisfy the specific requirements.
Students who complete the doctoral program in Division of Advanced Science and Technology will be granted one of the following degrees:
- Doctor of Philosophy in Knowledge Science
- Doctor of Philosophy in Information Science
- Doctor of Philosophy in Materials Science
Students who complete the doctoral program in Division of Transdisciplinary Sciences will be granted one of the following degrees:
- Doctor of Philosophy
- Doctor of Philosophy in Science
- Doctor of Philosophy in Engineering
