Cartesian Philosophy - Cartesian Science
Rene Des Cartes mostly summarizes several earlier views
The Cartesian View
Mind
mind is a center
consciousness directs and controls things
there is an active self
the prominent mental process is thinking
thinking is rational, logical, verbal, linguistic
overt, serial, monitored
first-person authority
World
world is beyond a veil, sharply separated, independent
("theater")
knowledge is propositional
justified true belief
foundationalism: grounding belief in logic and experience
(true/false, opinion/knowledge etc.)
Caveat: Descartes is important but not all-that-imortant...
it's just a ghost of ourselves
cf. who is Cartesian? We are the Cartesians...
