Local Sumo Hopeful Off to a Good Start
地元出身力士 絶好のスタート
Taiichi Goto, a graduate of Nanao Commercial High School and the 1994 National Intercollegiate Sumo Champion, recorded a 6-1 record in his professional debut at the New Year Grand Sumo Tournament. Goto, who is 185cm tall and weighs162kg, was delighted with his performance but added that the long tournament days made it difficult to get himself physically ready for bouts. He remarks "my real test will be in the next tournament when I move up in the ranking. I like to be more aggressive after the standoff".
七尾商業高校出身で1994年全日本大学相撲チャンピオンの後藤泰一は、大相撲初場所でのプロデビューで6勝1敗のスタートを切った。後藤は身長185cmで体重162kg。今場所の成績には満足しているが、場所が長くて体調維持が難しかったという。「番付けが上がる来場所が正念場。そして立ち合いを厳しくしたい」と本人は語っている。
Hyakumangoku Festival Adds Weekend Dates
百万石まつり、土・日曜日含む
The Organizing Committee of the 45th Hyakumangoku Festival announced on January 19th that two extra days will be added to this year's festival, including weekend dates. It will be held June 12th to 16th. The highlight of the event, a reenactment of Lord Maeda Toshiie's procession, will be held on Friday, June 14th. In order to have more citizens participate in the festival, the Hyakumangoku street dance will be held on Saturday the 15th and a new citizen's music festival is being planned.
The date changes are initiated because of declining attendance due to bad weather and the result of a survey conducted on city residents and tourists.
第45回百万石まつりの実行委員会は、今年の会期は週末を含み２日増やすことを1月19日発表した。今年の祭りは６月12日から16日まで開催されるが。祭りのハイライトである前田利家公のパレードは金曜日の14日に行われため、多くの市民が祭りに参加できるようにこの措置がなされることになった。これにより百万石踊り流しは土曜日に、新しい市民音楽会も週の終りに計画されている。会期の変更は、作年度悪天気により見物者が激減したことと、市民や観光客へのアンケート結果から検討が重ねられた。
More Vending Machines Offering Cheaper Beverages
安い清涼飲料水の自動販売機増加
Vending Machines selling canned beverages for reduced prices of 60 to 90 yen are popping up in Kanazawa and Uchinada. An Osaka-based company began setting up these machines last October, and they are stocked with imported and major brand-name beverages. The company's local representative quotes "during this hard economic period, it's time to return to the basics of business by selling good products at a lower price". The company hopes to increase the number of these machines from 22 currently to over 30 by Golden Week.
缶入の清涼飲料水を60から90円の底価格で販売している自動販売機が金沢と内灘に登場した。大阪府内に本社を置く飲料販売会社が昨年10月にこの販売機の設置を始め、輸入品と大手メーカーの製品をそろえている。会社の地元の代表者は「この不況の中、いいものを安く売る商売の本道に帰るべきだ」と話す。会社側は現在22台の販売機をゴールデンウィークまで30台程度まで増やしたいと考えている。
Goddess of Mercy Statue Frequent Victim of Lightening
大観音像 何回も落雷の被害
The 73 meter tall Goddess of Mercy (Kannon-sama) statue in Kaga City has been a constant victim of lightening strikes. Since its completion in December of 1987, these strikes has caused close to ten damages every year ranging from knocked out telephone lines to scars on the statue's concrete head. The operator of the statue, Utopia Kaga-no-Sato, has tried to minimize the damages this winter by installing a larger lightening mast connected to a pair of 30 meter deep wells near the statue to ground out the strikes. According to a professor at Kanazawa Institute of Technology, the warmer weather last October and November means larger thunder snowstorms will occur frequently until February.
加賀市にある高さ73mの大観音像は一定に落雷による被害に悩まされている。昭和62年12月完成以来、来落は年間10回近くあり、電話回線が故障したり観音像の頭部のコンクリートがめくれるなど被害が出ている。観音像を経営するユートピア加賀の郷は、今冬より大きい避雷針を設置し、アース線を２本、深い井戸まで引っぱることにした。金沢工業大学の教授によると昨年の10,11月は暖かった影響で大型の冬雷は２月まで続くと予測している。
Noto Railway's Discount Return Tickets Popular
のと鉄道の往復割引切符好調
Noto Railway reports that discount return tickets from cities and towns in Noto Peninsula to Kanazawa are selling briskly. The ticket, which is 200 to 700 yen cheaper than the express buses, also allows travellers to use non-reserved seats on limited express trains. Since its first offer last November, over five hundred tickets per month have been sold, however, this ticket cannot be purchased in Kanazawa Station and express buses are still quicker.
のと鉄道は能登半島の市町村から金沢への往復割引切符の売れ行きは好調だと発表した。この切符は特急バスより200から700円安く、特急列車の自由席も利用できる。販売を始めた昨年11月以降、毎月500枚以上の切符が売れるが、切符は金沢駅では購入できないことと特急バスのほうが所要時間が短いなど課題もある。
