First Sales of the New Year and Lucky Loot Bags
正月がやってくる：初売り／福袋
The Kanazawa Union of Shopping Districts has decided to continue last year's decision that all establishments agree to start business no earlier than January 3, 1996. Due to the increase in the severity of the competition from two newly-opened, large-scale department stores in Matto, many Kanazawa stores have declared that they will not abide by the January 3rd-opening rule despite pleas from the Union to the contrary. In order to open shop on January 2, the stores must start preparations on New Year's Day, but they strongly insist that they want the benefit of even one extra day of business.
The first sales of the New Year is not complete without lucky loot bags. Many people eagerly look forward to purchasing the bags filled with merchandise, usually worth much more than the price asked. Usually the bags are priced at 1000, 2000, and 3000 yen, but there are some that sell for one million yen or the number of the new year.
The loot bags are sealed so that one does not know what is inside until they open them up. Sometimes the items in the bags do not fit one's taste or size, but every year the people of Kanazawa look forward to the surprises inside the lucky loot bags.
金沢市商店街連盟は、平成8年の初売りを昨年通り「3日順守」と決めた。松任市に大型デパートが2店開店したことで広い地域で競争が激化し、初売りを3日に統一することができなくなり、「できれば守って欲しい」という要望にとどまった。初売りを2日にすると各商店は元日から準備に入らなければならないが、商店側では「1日でも多く営業したい」という希望が目立った。
初売りに欠かせないのが「福袋」。各商店が自店の商品を袋につめ、正月に売り出すもので、値段に比べるとかなり高価な商品が入っていることが多く、楽しみにしている人も多い。値段は1,000円、2,000円、3,000円などの単位で販売され、時には100万円や、年号にちなんだ値段で店頭に並ぶことも多い。
袋は密閉されていて何が入っているか空けてみるまでは分からない。装飾品や衣料品など、好み、サイズが合わない場合は困るが、庶民の楽しみとして正月にはおなじみになっている。
